Acting Artistic Director of the Southwest Civic Winds, Dr. Christopher Huls, is currently the Visiting Director of Bands and Woodwinds Instructor at Fort Lewis College. At FLC, he is responsible for conducting the Symphonic Band and Pep Band. He also teaches private clarinet and saxophone lessons, education courses, and a Blues, Jazz, and Rock online course.
Prior to his appointment at FLC, Dr. Huls was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Colorado Boulder. While at CU, he regularly guest conducted all university concert and athletic bands. Dr. Huls was selected to conduct the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in performance in July of 2017. Additionally, he has presented clinics at the College Band Directors National Association National and Southwest Regional Conferences. As an advocator of new music, Dr. Huls created an online reference for commissioning composers who have not written for the wind band medium and has collaborated with composers Elena Sprect and Jim Stephenson.
Dr. Huls completed degrees from the University of Colorado, University of Central Missouri, and Drake University. He holds membership in the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, the Conductors Guild, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. His primary conducting teachers include Dr. Donald J. McKinney, Dr. Scott Lubaroff, and John Canarina.
